Shallow exegesis leading to mass hysteria for years 2008-10-14 The historical significance of this book makes it an important read. It was the first of a series of books building into a mass end-times hysteria of our day. But do not buy into the hysteria and the tendency to go "antichrist hunting" in the latest newspaper. First, consult a good commentary to see the alternative views. Of all the eschatological constructs, this is the least sound as should become apparent when viewed side-by-side with others such as in Steve Gregg's wonderful book, Revelation: Four Views: A Parallel Commentary. Take this study seriously and not fall prey to popular fiction such as this and the "Left Behind" series of books.
The serious student of eschatology will also wish to become more rounded in their understanding of the book of Revelation with Dr. Hahn's The Lamb's Supper: The Mass as Heaven on Earth and The End : a Study of the Book of Revelation.
The world of eschatological study is a whole lot bigger than Mr. Lindsey and his evangelical friends care to admit. Do not fall into the last-days-madness trap that leads to a paralyzing fear and shallow understanding of scripture. Read this work for it's historical significance but do not let it be the last word in your study.
Boy have some reviewers got it wrong! 2008-09-29 This is a fantastic book and a good starting place for more study! (look up the OmegaLetter.com or HalLindsey.com) It was written 30 or so years ago, so true, there are some dated spots (like the USSR is no longer here--but Russia still is!) However, the prophesies it explains are still true--and always will be. Every single prophesy about the first coming of Christ was 100% fulfilled. There is nothing in this book to provoke fear, other than fear if you reject Christ and you are left behind! All these prophesies are for knowledge which is power over fear! The Bible says: "God does not give the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind."
Many people want to explain away the prophesies as "not literal". That is completely false. Anything that is not literal in the Bible says so plainly. Jesus tells us when he is speaking in a parable for instance. The argument that the Rapture or any of the other end time prophesies are "relatively recent" is easily explained. A good portion of the end-time prophesies are from Daniel, and Daniel was told by God that his book would be closed until the end time, and then it would be opened, and Jesus said that the generation that sees these things come to pass (Israel being a nation again and the Jews being drawn back from the four corners of the world) would not pass away until everything is fulfilled. That time is now. The people alive in 1948 (or perhaps 1967 when Jerusalem was in Jewish hands again), will not pass away until all the Bible prophesies about the End Times are fulfilled. No one but God knows the exact date the Rapture (and the final 7 years) will happen--but we can know the generation it will happen in.
And you know what? If I, or Hal Lindsey are wrong about the Rapture, it's not going to hurt us at all. But if you are wrong, then you will discover it to your peril...
The Bible says when you see all these things coming to pass to look up! For your redemtion draws near...!
There are Better Books Out There Today 2008-06-18 This book is OK but not one of my favorites when it comes to eschatology. Perpaps I would have given this book five stars when it was released in the 1970s but many prophecy books have surpassed it since then. Some of Hal Lindsey's predictions in this book turned out to be incorrect although other events mentioned are quite timely. I recommend this book but then read some of the newer books out there and draw your own conclusion.
Lindsey is a false prophet? 2008-05-20 When this book first came out it stated that Jesus would return 40 years after the founding of the Jewish nation. We are now 20 years apast the date Lindsey gave for the return of Jesus. I guess that makes Mr.Lindsey the leading false prophet in the evangelical church today.
Wish I'd read this decades ago 2008-03-12 I wish I'd picked up this book on the amazing truth of biblical prophecy when it was first published. I might not have wasted 30+ years jousting with windmills. Even now, it's an exciting read.
