Editorial Review:
Indigenous leaders and other visionaries suggest solutions to today’s global crisis

• Original Instructions are ancient ways of living from the heart of humanity within the heart of nature

• Explores the convergence of indigenous and contemporary science and the re-indigenization of the world’s peoples

• Includes authoritative indigenous voices, including John Mohawk and Winona LaDuke

For millennia the world’s indigenous peoples have acted as guardians of the web of life for the next seven generations. They’ve successfully managed complex reciprocal relationships between biological and cultural diversity. Awareness of indigenous knowledge is reemerging at the eleventh hour to help avert global ecological and social collapse. Indigenous cultural wisdom shows us how to live in peace--with the earth and one another.

Original Instructions evokes the rich indigenous storytelling tradition in this collection of presentations gathered from the annual Bioneers conference. It depicts how the world’s native leaders and scholars are safeguarding the original instructions, reminding us about gratitude, kinship, and a reverence for community and creation. Included are more than 20 contemporary indigenous leaders--such as Chief Oren Lyons, John Mohawk, Winona LaDuke, and John Trudell. These beautiful, wise voices remind us where hope lies.

I can't put the book down! 2008-12-29
Without echoing other people's reviews completely, this book is truly an outstanding collection of speeches and writings on the topic of indigenous worldviews. I highly recommend it.

an inspiring service to humanity 2008-04-03
I was blown away again and again by the contents of this incredible compilation. I am inspired, awe'd by what these writings speak of and overwhelmingly grateful that this information has not been lost and is making it's way back because of the committment the Bioneers have made to humanity. This perspective is largely unacknowledged by certain factions and unknown by most. Bless all of these Relations for sharing, caring and keeping their faith not only in the Creator but in us. Please read this book and tell everyone you know to read this book. I run a non-profit bookstore and this will be my top staff pick.

An eye-opening survey of sacred geography and a spirit-driven world. 2008-04-03
Melissa K. Nelson's ORIGINAL INSTRUCTIONS: INDIGENOUS TEACHINGS FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE will appeal both to New Age and Native American collections, following the relationships between biological ecosystems and human cultures and using indigenous storytelling traditions to present ideas from the annual Bioneers conference, a yearly meeting of environmentalists and social visionaries. Teaching follow ideas on community, creation, kinship and ecology and make for an eye-opening survey of sacred geography and a spirit-driven world.
