The Four Basic Consumer Rights

Introduction

In actual practice, consumers are not really economic people as they are supposed to be. There are cases of mistaken purchases since most consumers cannot distinguish the quality of one product from another except through brand names. There are testimonials that merely intend to pull the public. Even brand names are far from reliable. Sometimes, in the local marketing scene, many examples of testimonials are aired over the radio and television, which at times are far from reality.

Consumer protection is a universal concern. The United Nations Commission on Human Rights listed down four basic consumer rights:

Right to Safety- This is the right of consumer to be protected against the marketing of goods, which are hazardous to our health of life.

Right to be Informed- This is the right of consumers to be informed about the products and services and condition of sale and to be protected from fraudulent, deceitful or gravely misleading information, advertising, labeling or other practices.

Right to Choose- this is the right of consumers to be assured that, whenever possible, access to a variety of products and services at competitive price and those industries in which government regulations are substituted is satisfactory.

Right to be Heard- This is the right of consumers to be assured that consumer interest will receive full and sympathetic consideration in the formulation of government policy and fair treatment in its administrative tribunals.
